Ever since I wrote Lost & Found, I’ve heard from hundreds of readers who have told me stories about close relationships with dogs. The stories are remarkable and they almost invariably tribute a dog who healed a reader from a broken spirit. How do dogs do this? By their loyalty, their unrelenting affection, and humor, their ability to forgive us for our grumpiness and shortcomings, and their determination to constantly rejoice in the most simple pleasures of life. As a psychologist who has worked with depressed clients for years, I have also seen the crucial role dogs play in demanding that people get up off the couch and go outside.
I have asked writers to comment on current or past dogs in their lives. Marianne Banks is my first guest blogger. Her debut novel, Growing Up Delicious, will be published in January 2012. I’ve been fortunate enough to see the early draft of this book and it is one of my favorites.
